Meet Ashley

“One child, one teacher, one book, one pen can change the world.” – Malala Yousafzai, education and justice activist

Hello!

I’m Ashley, owner of A Mind Worth Reaching. I earned my B.A. from The University of Rhode Island and my M.Ed from George Mason University. I hold a Virginia teaching license and engage in ongoing professional development. After teaching third grade in Fairfax County Public Schools for five years I decided to open A Mind Worth Reaching.

I grew up in Rhode Island and have called Virginia home for over ten years with my husband Steve. I am the proud mom of Stephen Jr. and Hazel, and the most patient dog June. When I am not teaching, I love to spend time with my family, cook and bake, organize EVERYTHING, and try to nurture my hopeful green thumb.  My collection of children’s books is bountiful, and finding the perfect book for a child, a moment, a lesson, or a season brings me great joy. I am the designated mathematician in my household, tasked with measuring for all projects (measure twice, install once), calculating the tip on all restaurant checks, and determining the appropriate amount of ingredients when doubling and tripling recipes.  Doing math is so much fun!

Thank you for being here; I hope to have the opportunity to get to know you and your child.

Teaching Philosophy

I believe that all children have the ability to learn. Essential to this learning are:

(1) a teacher who holds high expectations, works from a place of compassion, is invested in the success of every student, and engages in ongoing professional development

(2) a learning environment that is welcoming, free from distraction, offers engaging materials, and supports opportunities for physical movement and integration of the natural world

(3) collaboration with family to achieve deeper understanding of student identity, interests, goals, challenges and successes, and foster a continuity of learning between all environments

(4) the use of research based methods of instruction that provide students with hands on, individualized instruction, allowing them to take measured academic risks in order to meet and exceed high expectations, build confidence, and feel the joy of their successes

The mind of every child is worth reaching.
